Ever since I watched the Netflix documentary “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment,” my curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring plant-based food have skyrocketed! While honestly, I hadn’t considered transitioning to a fully vegan or vegetarian diet, eating and incorporating more vegetables or plant-based foods into my meals now excites me more than ever. Not only are plant-based foods (if planned well) beneficial for our health and well-being, but they also require fewer resources to produce compared to animal products, making them a more sustainable choice for our planet <3.
Inspired by this newfound enthusiasm, I recently decided to explore the world of plant-based foods and have been eyeing for innovative options available in the market. During a recent grocery trip to Whole Foods Market, I stumbled upon an interesting plant-based tuna salad product by a local Canadian-made brand called “Save Da Sea.” Curious about how the plant-based alternative tastes, especially compared to traditional tuna salad, I couldn’t resist trying it. So I thought, why don’t I make a plant-based tuna sandwich to try this tuna salad with?
Today, I would like to tag you along on my plant-based adventure as I “craft” my take on the classic tuna sandwich using plant-based ingredients. Oh, by the way, spoiler alert! Despite the weird-plain-looking appearance of my tuna sandwich, they are still delicious and flavorful, though! 😊.
Ingredients
75 g Organic Soft Tofu
2 pack (56.7 g) of “Just Egg” – Folded Plant Egg, cut into smaller chunks
1 pack (100 g) “Save Da Sea”- Plant-Based Tuna Salad
2 tbsp of Eggless Mayo (I use “Spectrum” Vegan Mayo)
2-3 tbsp of Honey
Red Onion, Diced
Celery Stalk, Diced
4 stalks Green Onions, Chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
Sweet Corn
1-2 tsp Salt
Black Pepper
White Bread
Chili Sauce or Sriracha *Optional
Instructions
- Begin by preparing all the ingredients and chopping the vegetables into smaller chunks or pieces.
- In a mixing bowl, combined the chopped “Just Egg” folded plant eggs with the diced vegetables, tofu, and 1 pack of Save Da Sea plant-based tuna salad.
- Add the vegan mayo, honey, salt, pepper and chili sauce to the mixture, and stir until well combined
- Allow the mixture to chill in the fridge for at least an hour to let the flavours meld together and the vegetables moisten.
- Once chilled, spread the plant-based tuna mixture onto slices of tasty toasted white bread of your preference. Enjoy!!
I must say, this plant-based tuna sandwich exceeded my expectations. Thanks to the already tasty and flavorful “Save Da Sea” plant-based tuna salad and the additional umami-ness from “Just Egg” Folded plant eggs, the whole sandwich is even tastier. Surprisingly enough, the taste and texture of the plant-based tuna sandwich closely resembled that of a traditional tuna sandwich. I could distinctly smell the fishiness and aroma of tuna, along with the shredded texture that lent authenticity to the experience—though I noticed a slight crunchier and watery texture in the plant-based tuna salad version, it didn’t bother me one bit, it added a refreshing twist to the dish.
